The Tony Award nominee will join “Chicago” as Lola, a former “RuPaul’s Drag Race” contestant who has a much more conservative, American accent.
The musical centers around singer-songwriter Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Paulson, as she navigates the ups and downs of the early ’90s — when she becomes involved in the sex industry in a new way.
“Lola” plays the role of Carrie’s best friend who accompanies her on her first date with the guy, played here by “Chicago” alum Jeffrey Wright, when Carrie starts dressing like a dominatrix. Carrie’s ex-boyfriend is played by Joe Albanese.
Monsoon plays the role of Carrie on the show. Monsoon is also an executive producer for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and has performed in “Chicago” multiple times.
Monsoon said in a statement: “I am beyond excited to be joining the world of Chicago! Having played the character of Carrie on RuPaul’s Drag Race, I am extremely familiar with the story and characters of ‘The Great Gatsby.’ I am looking forward to creating an iconic role that will resonate deeply with audiences.”
“Chicago” will be staged by the Roundabout Theatre Company (RTC) with production set to open June 28 at the Music Box Theatre in New York. The show will feature the original music and lyrics by Pulitzer-Prize-winning playwright Alan Ayckbourn.
The musical centers around Carrie (Sarah Paulson), the world’s top lawyer, who goes on to reinvent herself as a new and more liberated woman,
